Workspaces

Create or join a workspace, manage settings, ownership, and members.

A workspace is an isolated space with its own members, channels, direct messages, and integrations. Nothing in one workspace is visible from another.

Create or join a workspace

  • Create a workspace — set it up and a unique join code is generated for you to share.
  • Join an existing workspace — use its 6-character join code (case-insensitive) or an invite link someone shares with you.

Why joining is rate-limited

Joining by code is limited to a handful of attempts per 10 minutes, so codes can't be guessed by brute force. If you hit the limit, wait a few minutes and try again.

Workspace settings

Admins and owners manage the workspace under Customize workspace → Settings:

  • Name, description, and icon — edit how the workspace presents itself.
  • Reset the join code — generate a fresh code. Existing members keep their access; only the old code stops working.

Ownership

Ownership has two levels:

  • Primary owner — the person who created the workspace. There is exactly one.
  • Owners — any number of additional owners with owner-level control.

Only the primary owner can transfer primary ownership (to another owner) or delete the workspace.

Permissions & policies

Admins can tighten some capabilities from "everyone" to "admins only". These policies include:

  • Who can create channels.
  • The message edit window — how long after posting a message can still be edited.
  • Whether members can delete their own messages.
  • Require two-factor authentication — when on, every member must set up 2FA before they can use the workspace. New workspaces have this on by default. See Account & security.

Where policies live

Configure these under Customize workspace (admin/owner only). Changing a policy affects everyone in the workspace.

Members

When you remove a member, they are deactivated rather than erased: they lose access to the workspace, but their past messages stay attributed to them so conversations still make sense. An admin can reactivate a deactivated member later to restore their access.
