Direct Messages
Start 1:1 and group conversations, and manage their details.
Direct messages are private conversations, separate from channels. A DM is either 1:1 with one person or a group DM with three or more people.
Start a conversation
- 1:1 — pick a person to open (or reopen) a private conversation with them.
- Group DM — pick three or more people to chat together.
No duplicate groups
If you open a group DM with the exact same set of people again, Sangria reuses the existing conversation instead of creating a duplicate.
Name and topic
Any member of a group can give it a bit of identity:
- Name — a custom label so the group is easy to recognize in your sidebar.
- Topic — a short line describing what the conversation is about.
Manage the conversation
Open a conversation's details to see and edit its:
- Name and topic.
- Member list — including adding people.
Adding people to a 1:1
Adding someone to a 1:1 creates a new group DM with everyone in it — the original 1:1 stays as it was.
Mute a conversation
If a DM is noisy, mute it and it stops notifying you. You'll still see it in your sidebar and can open it anytime. See Notifications for how muting fits with your other notification settings.
Good to know
DMs always live within a single workspace. You can't direct-message someone who's in a different workspace.
