Channels

Create channels, organize your sidebar, and manage who's in them.

Channels are shared spaces for a topic, project, or team. Anyone in a public channel can read and post; private channels are invite-only. Every workspace has at least one default channel that everyone joins automatically.

Create a channel

  1. Click the + next to Channels in the sidebar (or use the create button in the channel browser).
  2. Step 1 — Name it. Channel names are lowercased and use hyphens instead of spaces (marketing-campaigns, not Marketing Campaigns). If your workspace has naming prefixes, pick one here.
  3. Step 2 — Describe it. Add an optional description and choose Public or Private. Create the channel.

Public vs private

You can make a channel private at creation. The workspace's default channel can't be made private — it's the one space everyone shares.

Topic vs description

Channels have two separate fields:

  • Topic — a short, at-a-glance line shown in the header (e.g. "Q3 launch — ship Aug 1"). Meant to change often.
  • Description — a longer explanation of what the channel is for, shown in the channel's details.

Both are edited from the channel header or the channel's details panel by a channel admin or a workspace admin.

Organize your sidebar

Your sidebar is yours — how you arrange it doesn't affect anyone else.

  • Sections — group channels and DMs under custom, collapsible headings (with an emoji). Create a section, then drag items into it.
  • Drag and drop — reorder channels and move them between sections.
  • Collapse — collapse a section to hide its contents until you need them.

Membership & notifications

  • Join a public channel — open it from the channel browser and join; you can leave anytime.
  • Private channels — an existing member or a workspace admin adds you.
  • Per-channel notifications — set each channel to notify you on All messages, Mentions only, or Nothing. You can also mute a channel (optionally until a specific time). See Notifications.

Naming prefixes

Admins can define a list of allowed prefixes (like proj-, team-, help-), each with a short description, plus an optional maximum name length. When prefixes are set, the create dialog guides everyone toward consistent names. Manage these in Customize workspace → Channels.

Channel admins

A channel can have its own admins (separate from workspace admins). A channel admin can edit the channel's topic/description, manage its membership, and pin or remove messages in it — without being a workspace-wide admin.

Whoever creates a channel becomes its first admin automatically. A channel can have any number of admins — from the Members tab in the channel's details, an existing admin (or a workspace admin) can promote any member to admin, or demote one back to a regular member. A channel always needs at least one admin, so the option to demote the only remaining one is disabled.

Announcement channels

Turn a channel into an announcement channel when you want a broadcast space — a place where only admins post and everyone else reads. In the channel's Settings, turn on Announcement channel. From then on:

  • Only channel admins and workspace admins can post new messages.
  • Everyone else still reads everything, replies in threads, and reacts — so discussion continues under each announcement without cluttering the main feed.

For members who can't post, the message box is replaced with a short "Only admins can post" note (they can still open a thread to reply). A channel admin or workspace admin can toggle it off again anytime to reopen posting to everyone.

Who can turn it on

Any channel admin (or workspace admin) can make a channel announcement-only — the same people who manage the channel's topic and members.

Delete a channel

A workspace admin or channel admin can delete a channel from its management page. The default channel can't be deleted. Deleting removes the channel and its messages for everyone.
