Messages

Format, edit, react, thread, mention, pin, schedule, save, and share messages.

Messages are the heart of Sangria. You write them in the composer — a rich-text editor with formatting, @mentions, and emoji (including your workspace's custom emoji) — and send them to a channel or a direct message.

Format and send

Type in the composer at the bottom of any channel or DM, then send. Along the way you can:

  • Apply formatting as you type.
  • Add @mentions to pull people in (see Mentions).
  • Drop in emoji and custom emoji.
  • Attach one or more files (see Files & attachments).

Formatting

Toggle the formatting bar with the Aa button below the composer. The editor supports:

  • Bold, italic, underline, and strikethrough
  • Links — select text, then add a URL
  • Ordered and bulleted lists
  • Blockquotes for quoting text
  • Inline code and code blocks (see below)

Code: inline vs. block

There are two separate ways to mark up code:

  • Inline code wraps a short snippet inside a line — a function name, value, or path like getBlockedCategories() — in a small monospace chip.
  • A code block is a multi-line box for a whole snippet, with monospace text and horizontal scrolling for long lines. Reach for it when you're pasting more than a word or two.

Both look the same in the sent message as they do while you're typing.

Edit and delete

  • Edit your own messages. Your workspace may set an edit window (in minutes) after which a message can no longer be changed; a value of 0 means there's no limit.
  • Delete your own messages, where your workspace's policy allows it.
  • Admins can edit or delete any message.

Admin edits are logged

When an admin edits someone else's message, the change is recorded in the workspace audit log.

Reactions

React to any message with an emoji or a custom emoji. Click a reaction again to remove it. Each person can add a given emoji to a message once.

Mentions

Mentions notify the people you name:

  • @person — notifies that one person.
  • @user-group — notifies the group's members who are in that channel.
  • @channel, @everyone, and @here — broadcasts that notify people in the channel.

Threads

Reply to a message to start a thread. Replies are grouped under the parent message, so a side conversation stays out of the main flow while everyone can still follow it.

Forward a message

Forward a message to another channel or DM to share it where it's more useful. You can only forward a message you're able to read in the first place.

Schedule a message

Compose a message now and schedule it to send later. You can cancel a scheduled message any time before it sends.

Pin a message

Pin an important message in a channel or DM to keep it handy. Pinned messages appear in the Pins tab.

Save for later and reminders

Save any message to your personal Later list to come back to it. Later is organized into In progress, Completed, and Archived. You can also set a reminder time so a saved message resurfaces when you need it.

When a reminder comes due, Sangriabot — a permanent workspace assistant present in every workspace — sends it to you as a direct message, with a link back to the original item. It's the same DM Sangriabot uses to welcome you when you first join a workspace. That DM follows your regular notification settings (mute it like any other DM if you'd rather not be pushed), and it can't be uninstalled or removed.

Polls

Type /poll (optionally followed by your question, e.g. /poll What should we order?) in a channel or DM composer to open the poll creator. Add up to 10 options, choose whether people can pick more than one answer, and whether voting is anonymous (nobody, including you, sees who picked what — only the counts).

In a channel, you can also make the poll's creator anonymous — Sangriabot posts the poll instead of you, so the channel never learns who asked. You (and admins) can still close and edit it; the option isn't available for DM polls, since there's no one to stay anonymous from in a 1:1 conversation.

Two more ways to shape a poll:

  • Hide results until closed — voting is "blind": nobody but the creator (or an admin) sees live counts while the poll is open. Everyone sees full results once it closes.
  • Auto-close — pick a time (a preset like "In 1 hour" or a custom date) and the poll closes itself, no need to remember to close it manually.

Once posted, click an option to vote — results update live for everyone as votes come in (unless results are hidden). Picking a different option in a single-choice poll swaps your vote; clicking your current pick again removes it. The person who created the poll (or a workspace admin) can close it at any time, which stops new votes and reveals a final, ranked results view — or edit it beforehand: change the question, rename an option, or add new options. An option that already has votes can't be removed, to avoid losing anyone's answer.

Files & attachments

Attach one or more files to a message. Everything shared in a channel is indexed in its Files & links tab, so you can find a file or link long after it scrolled away.

Click an image, video, or PDF to open it in a full-size preview instead of downloading it. Any other file type downloads directly when clicked — hover a file to reveal a dedicated download button either way.

Links you post auto-unfurl into a preview — title, description, and image — so people can see what you shared without leaving the conversation. The author of a message can hide a specific preview.

Custom emoji

Upload custom emoji for your workspace, then use them in messages and reactions just like standard emoji.
